What Is Actually in Your Herbal Supplements: The Heavy Metal Problem Nobody Is Talking About

dandelion root herbs most commonly used in liver, lymph, and detox formulas. The risk is highest exactly where the demand for clean products is highest.

I did not set out to start a supplement company.

I set out to find something that actually worked.

After years of dealing with my own chronic health issues I became obsessive about what I was putting in my body. I researched herbs. I studied traditional medicine. I learned what the plants could do when they were grown right, sourced right, and extracted properly.

And then I went looking for those products.

What I found was an industry full of beautiful labels and empty bottles. Glycerin based extracts marketed as tinctures. Diluted formulas at 1:5 ratios that would never produce a meaningful result. Organic certifications on products that had never been tested for heavy metals. Supplements designed to look good on a shelf and be forgotten in a cabinet.

I could not find anything I would actually take myself.

So we made it.

Our herbalist — a Doctor in the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine with over half a century of experience — and I started formulating for ourselves. For our own health. For our own families. We tested everything on ourselves first. Our herbalist tested every formula on themselves and on clients who wanted to try them. The teas came first. Then when we wanted something more potent and convenient we extracted them into tinctures.

The business came after the products worked.

That is still how we operate. Nothing goes into a bottle that we would not put in our own bodies. Nothing gets sold that has not been used and verified by us first. And when we wanted to confirm that our formulas were actually clean — especially the root based herbs that carry the highest risk for heavy metal contamination — we paid for independent third party laboratory testing.

Not because we were required to. Because we needed to know.

What we found when we tested our Detox Tonic is at the end of this post. But first I want to show you what is in the products most people are currently trusting with their health.

The problem nobody in this industry wants to talk about

Plants absorb what is in the soil they grow in. This is one of the most fundamental facts of botany. It is also one of the most inconvenient facts for an industry built on the idea that natural equals safe.

Root based herbs are particularly vulnerable. Dandelion root, burdock root, marshmallow root, licorice root — these are herbs that penetrate deepest into the soil and absorb the most. They are also some of the most commonly used herbs in detox and wellness formulas. The irony of taking a detox supplement that is loading your body with heavy metals is not lost on me.

Organic certification does not test for heavy metal content. A product can be certified organic and still contain alarming levels of heavy metals depending on where the herbs were grown and what is in that soil. Most brands do not test for this because the testing is expensive and the results can be embarrassing.

In 2026 Lead Safe Mama — one of the most respected independent consumer safety advocates in the country — published third party laboratory test results for some of the most trusted herbal tea and supplement brands on the market. The findings were alarming.

Here is what they found:

Traditional Medicinals Organic Dandelion Root Tea — marketed specifically for detox and digestion — tested at 301.4 ppb of lead. The proposed action level for children is 5 ppb. That is 6,028% over the action level. The same product tested at 190.9 ppb of cadmium — 3,818% over — and 95.9 ppb of arsenic — 959% over.

Traditional Medicinals Dandelion Leaf and Root Tea — tested at 650.1 ppb of lead and 533.8 ppb of cadmium.

Traditional Medicinals Mother's Milk — specifically marketed to breastfeeding mothers — tested at 160 ppb of lead, 3,200% over the proposed action level, and 39.9 ppb of cadmium, 798% over.

Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat — taken by millions of people with sore throats — tested at 203.6 ppb of lead and 175.2 ppb of cadmium.

Tazo Passion Tea — tested at 277.7 ppb of lead and 56.5 ppb of cadmium.

PureNatal Multivitamin for Mom and Baby — a prenatal supplement taken by pregnant women — tested at 81.4 ppb of lead, 1,628% over the action level, and 34.1 ppb of arsenic, 341% over.

Garden of Life Women's Multi 40+ — tested at 128.8 ppb of lead, 2,576% over the action level, and 832.7 ppb of arsenic, 8,327% over the proposed action level.

These are not fringe brands. These are the products sitting in the cabinets of health conscious women who are trying to do things the right way. The organic label, the natural branding, the wellness positioning — none of it tells you what is actually in the product.

All of these findings are from Lead Safe Mama's independent third party laboratory testing published in 2026. Their methodology is transparent and their full reports are publicly available at LeadSafeMama.com I am not making these claims. The lab results are.

Why this matters for your detox

If you are taking herbs to support your body's detoxification — and heavy metal contamination is in the formula you are using — you are adding to the toxic burden you are trying to clear.

This is not a theoretical concern. Heavy metals accumulate in the body over time. Lead deposits in bone. Cadmium accumulates in the kidneys. Arsenic affects the liver, skin, and nervous system. These are the same organs and systems you are trying to support with your herbal protocol.

The herbs most commonly associated with heavy metal accumulation are the root based ones. Dandelion root, burdock root, marshmallow root, licorice root, astragalus root. These are also the herbs most commonly used in liver, lymph, and detox formulas. The risk is highest exactly where the demand for clean products is highest.

What we found when we tested our formula

Our Detox Tonic contains dandelion root, burdock root, marshmallow root, and licorice root. These are the highest risk ingredients in the herbal supplement world for heavy metal contamination. They are also the herbs I believe in most deeply for supporting the liver, lymphatic system, and elimination pathways.

Because of that risk profile Detox Tonic was the first formula we had independently tested.

We sent it to Vanguard Laboratory — an A2LA accredited third party testing facility in Olympia, Washington. Here is what came back in September 2025:

Arsenic — Non Detect

Mercury — Non Detect

Lead — Non Detect

Cadmium — Non Detect

Every microbiological test — yeast, mold, E. coli, staph aureus, and coliforms — also non detect or negative.

Our full lab report is on our website. We do not hide it. We put it in our navigation because we think you deserve to see it.

What our formulas actually do to heavy metals in the body

I want to tell you about a client of our herbalist who works in a battery manufacturing plant.

Battery plants are one of the highest risk environments for heavy metal exposure. Lead, cadmium, arsenic — the same toxicants showing up in those herbal tea lab results — are present in significant concentrations in that work environment. This client had his blood tested as part of standard occupational health monitoring and his heavy metal levels came back high enough that he was pulled from work. He could not return until his levels came down.

He started taking our Detox Tonic and Warrior Elixir.

Two weeks later his blood tested clean. He was cleared to return to work.

This is not a marketing story. This is what happened to a real person taking our formulas for a real and documented heavy metal burden. And it is exactly why we put together our Heavy Metal Detox Bundle — Detox Tonic, Warrior Elixir, and Drain+Defend working together to mobilize heavy metals, support the liver and lymphatic system, and move what the body has been accumulating out through the elimination pathways.

The irony is profound. The products most trusted for detox and wellness are quietly loading people with the same heavy metals our formulas are designed to clear. We did not plan it that way. But the contrast speaks for itself.

What you can do right now

Ask for lab results before you buy any herbal supplement. If a brand cannot produce independent third party heavy metal testing — especially for root based formulas — that is information worth having.

Look up any product you currently take at LeadSafeMama.com Their database is extensive and their findings may surprise you.

And if you are using herbs to support your body's natural detoxification — make sure what you are taking is not adding to the problem you are trying to solve.
