How to Yoni Steam the Right Way: A Beginner's Guide to At-Home Vaginal Steaming
Yoni steaming (also called vaginal steaming, V-steaming, womb steaming, or bajos) is an ancient self-care ritual found in cultures all over the world, from Korea to Central America to Africa. It's simple: you sit over a gentle, herb-infused steam and let warmth and plant medicine support your womb wellness and pelvic health.
Yoni steaming is having a big moment right now in the holistic feminine wellness world, which means there is a LOT of information out there. Some of it is great, and some of it is unsafe. So let's walk through how to do an at-home yoni steam the right way.

What Are the Benefits of Yoni Steaming?
Women have used vaginal steaming for generations as part of natural healing and menstrual health care. Here's what so many women, including my clients, say they experience:
Natural period relief and less cramping
Feeling more connected to their menstrual cycle and their body
Deep relaxation and nervous system regulation
A grounding, somatic self-care ritual that helps them slow down
Support after their period to feel "cleared out"
Comfort and warmth for the pelvic area
To be honest with you, research on yoni steaming is still very limited, so think of it as a traditional, supportive practice and not a cure. It works best as one part of a bigger holistic wellness picture that includes diet, herbal remedies, gut health, hydration, and caring for your whole mind and body. This is why a lot of my clients choose coaching programs to work with me directly so I can create a custom plan for them that includes yoni steaming. It also pairs beautifully with cycle syncing, since steaming is all about working with your cycle instead of against it. I have a course on this in my skool community.
What Your Period Is Trying to Tell You
Your menstrual cycle is like a monthly report card for your hormones and your whole body. When something is off, your period is usually the first place it shows up. Here's what some of the most common period problems can mean.
Why Periods Become Heavy or Full of Clots
A heavy period or a period with lots of clots often comes back to hormone balance. When estrogen is high compared to progesterone (often called estrogen dominance), the uterine lining builds up thicker than it should. More lining means more blood to shed, and when blood pools and flows faster than your body can thin it, it forms clots.
Common contributors include:
Estrogen dominance and low progesterone
Fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, or endometriosis
A sluggish liver that isn't clearing used hormones well
Low thyroid function
Inflammation and a diet high in processed foods
Hormone-disrupting chemicals in plastics, fragrances, and personal care products
A copper IUD
In traditional womb care, a cold, stagnant womb with poor circulation is also seen as a reason old blood and clots linger. This is one of the main reasons women steam: to bring warmth and circulation to the womb so the bleed can flow more freely.
Why Cycles Are Short
A normal cycle is roughly 21 to 35 days. Cycles shorter than 21 days, or cycles where you bleed every two to three weeks, often point to a short luteal phase. That's the second half of your cycle, after ovulation, when progesterone should be holding the lining steady. When progesterone is low, the lining sheds early.
Common contributors include:
Low progesterone
Chronic stress and high cortisol
Thyroid imbalance
Nutrient gaps, especially magnesium, B6, and zinc
Perimenopause, when cycles often start to shorten
Why Cycles Are Long
Cycles longer than 35 days usually mean ovulation is happening late or not at all. Your body is waiting for the right signals to release an egg, and until it does, your period doesn't come.
Common contributors include:
PCOS and blood sugar or insulin issues
Chronic stress
Under-eating, over-exercising, or very low body fat
Thyroid imbalance
High prolactin
Coming off hormonal birth control
Breastfeeding or perimenopause
Why Women Miss Their Periods
First things first: if there's any chance you could be pregnant, take a test. Beyond pregnancy, a missed period means your body didn't ovulate that cycle, and it's usually a sign your body doesn't feel safe or resourced enough to reproduce.
Common contributors include:
Big stress, trauma, illness, or travel
Not eating enough or training too hard
PCOS
Thyroid or prolactin imbalance
Coming off birth control
Breastfeeding
Perimenopause
Why So Many Women Are Struggling With Fertility
Fertility struggles are becoming more and more common, and there's rarely just one cause. Everything above plays a role, because a healthy, regular cycle with ovulation is the foundation of fertility.
Common contributors include:
Irregular ovulation or no ovulation, often from PCOS
Low progesterone, which makes it harder for a pregnancy to hold
Endometriosis or blocked fallopian tubes
Thyroid imbalance
Chronic stress and nervous system overload
Blood sugar issues and inflammation
Hormone-disrupting chemicals in our environment
Egg quality, which naturally changes with age
Male factor, which plays a part in roughly a third to a half of cases, so both partners matter
Where Yoni Steaming Fits In
Yoni steaming won't fix a hormone imbalance by itself. The root causes above need to be supported from the inside out with nutrition, blood sugar balance, liver support, stress care, and the right internal herbs. Where steaming shines is as a supportive womb practice that brings warmth and circulation, eases cramping, and helps your body release the old so it can start fresh each cycle.
Support From the Inside: Womb Restore
This is exactly why I created Womb Restore. Steaming supports your womb from the outside, and Womb Restore supports your hormones and cycle from the inside. Together, they're a beautiful pair.
Womb Restore is an organic, wildcrafted tincture made with herbs that have been used for generations to support the female reproductive system:
Vitex berry: supports healthy progesterone and ovulation, which is key for short cycles, long cycles, and missed periods
Red raspberry leaf: the classic uterine tonic, helps tone and strengthen the womb
Dong quai: known as "female ginseng," warms the womb and supports circulation and a regular cycle
Wild yam: supports hormone balance and eases cramping
Red clover: nourishing and supportive for the reproductive system
Damiana: supports libido and a healthy mood around your cycle
Schisandra berry and licorice root: support your body's stress response, since stress is behind so many cycle issues
Peppermint: soothes the belly and helps everything work together
Whether you're dealing with irregular cycles, painful periods, missed periods, or you're preparing your body for conception, Womb Restore gives your hormones the steady support they need to find their rhythm.
Extra Strength Womb Restore
For women with deeper or long-standing cycle struggles, I also make Extra Strength Womb Restore. It's the same powerful blend, extracted at twice the strength (2:1 instead of 1:1), so you get more herbal support in every dose.
Extra Strength is a great fit if you:
Have struggled with your cycle for years
Have tried the regular strength and want more support
Are working on fertility and want to give your body everything it needs
You are sensitve to alcohol
Please note: Womb Restore is for cycle support and is not for use during pregnancy. Skip it if you're on hormonal birth control, and talk with me first if you have high blood pressure or heavy bleeding, since some of these herbs are warming and blood-moving.
My Favorite Womb Care Combo
Take Womb Restore or Extra Strength Womb Restore daily.

Inside and out, this is how we bring the womb back into balance.
How Steaming With Herbs Works
There are two things working together in a yoni steam: the warmth and the herbs.
The warmth. Gentle, moist heat brings blood flow to the pelvic area and helps tight muscles relax. It's the same reason a heating pad helps with cramps, except steam wraps around the area and reaches the external tissue directly.
The herbs. When you simmer herbs, they release their aromatic oils into the steam. Those aromatic compounds are what give herbs like lavender, rosemary, thyme, and mugwort their scent, and they are a big part of why these plants have been used for cleansing and soothing for centuries. The steam carries them to the delicate tissue of the vulva, where they can do their work.
Each herb has its own action:
Soothing and healing: calendula, plantain, rose, chamomile
Toning and tightening: yarrow, red raspberry leaf, lady's mantle
Cleansing and antibacterial: thyme, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass
Warming and circulating: mugwort, rosemary
Calming for cramps: motherwort, lemon balm, chamomile
This is why the custom blend matters so much. Each woman has a completely unique cycle and there are a lot of factors involved in making a custom blend. The right mix of herbs can calm cramping, tone tissue, freshen things up, or soothe dryness, depending on what your body needs. These herbs can also help with things like cysts, fibroids, yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and other vaginal issues.
Yoni Steam Chair or No Chair?
You can steam either way. Here's how to choose.
With a yoni steam chair or stool: This is the most comfortable option and my favorite. You sit on an open-seat steam stool or V-steam chair with your bowl of yoni steam herbs underneath. It's easier to relax, easier to control the distance from the steam, and great if you plan to steam regularly. You can find steaming chairs on Etsy.
Without a chair (DIY yoni steam): No special equipment needed. You can squat or kneel over the bowl, or carefully place it in a clean toilet bowl and sit on the toilet. Squatting is the traditional way, but it can be hard to hold for long, so the toilet method is the easiest for beginners. There are also steaming bowls on amazon for sale. You can insert these into the toilet. Though these would not be a long term solution I would recommend because they are normally plastic which is normally filled with harmful chemicals. They also lack the option for depth and often are too close to the body for a comfortable steam.
Whichever you choose, the most important thing is a safe, comfortable distance from the steam so you're not burning yourself.
How to Do a Yoni Steam at Home, Step by Step
Prepare your yoni steam herbs. Add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of dried herbs to a pot with 4 to 6 cups of water.
Simmer. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer, covered, for 10 to 15 minutes.
Let it cool. This is the step people skip, and it matters most. Let the water cool for several minutes. Steam should feel warm and pleasant, never hot.
Test the steam. Hold your hand or inner wrist over the bowl for 30 seconds. If it's uncomfortable there, it's too hot for your yoni.
Set up. Place the bowl under your steam chair, stool, or in the toilet. Undress from the waist down.
Wrap up. Drape a blanket or long robe around your waist down to the floor to hold the steam in.
Steam. Sit for 10 to 20 minutes. Breathe, relax, journal, or pray. This is your moment of mindfulness. If at any point it feels too hot, move away right away.
Rest after. Stay warm, drink water, and take it easy afterward.
When to Yoni Steam
The best time is right after your period ends.
Avoid steaming during your period.
Stop steaming about 3 to 5 days before your next expected cycle.
How often depends on your goals. Many women steam 1 to 2 times a week, but your plan should be personalized to your body.
When NOT to Yoni Steam
Please skip steaming and talk to a qualified provider if you:
Are pregnant or could be pregnant
Have an active infection, open sores, or a fever
Are bleeding heavily or between periods
Have an IUD (ask your provider first)
Are within 6 weeks postpartum without guidance
Have unexplained pelvic pain or pressure
And never, ever use steam that's too hot. Burns are the number one risk with vaginal steaming, and they are completely avoidable.
Why the Right Yoni Steam Herbs Matter
Not every herb belongs in a steam. Some are amazing taken internally but too harsh for delicate tissue, like wormwood, black walnut, and clove. Roots and barks also don't release much into steam, so leafy herbs and flowers are usually the stars of a good steam blend.
Your blend should also match what's going on. Warming herbs like mugwort and rosemary are wonderful for a sluggish, crampy cycle, but they're not the right choice if you bleed heavily. Drying herbs like yarrow help with discharge, but too much can make dryness worse. That's why personalized yoni steam blends work so much better than one-size-fits-all kits.
