A Note on the Current Cyclospora Outbreak in Michigan and Ohio
Right now, more than 3,000 people in Michigan and Ohio have been sickened by Cyclospora cayetanensis — a microscopic parasite linked to contaminated lettuce and salad greens. Cases have been reported across 31 states and 2026 is already the worst year for Cyclospora on record in the United States, surpassing the previous high set in 2019. Michigan alone has reported over 3,300 cases — roughly 50 times the state's typical annual caseload — with dozens of hospitalizations across both states.
Cyclospora causes watery diarrhea, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. It cannot be removed by washing produce with water and is not killed by freezing. Diagnosis is challenging because the parasite sheds intermittently in stool and is not included on standard lab workups — a specific test must be requested. Conventional treatment is a course of antibiotics.
If you are in Michigan, Ohio, or another affected state and have developed persistent diarrhea in the past few weeks, contact your healthcare provider and specifically request Cyclospora testing.
This outbreak is also a reminder that parasitic exposure is not rare, exotic, or limited to travel. It is happening right now, in your state, from food most people consider safe. The question of how to support the body during and after a parasitic illness — and how to address the terrain that made the infection possible — is exactly what this post covers.
If you have started a parasite cleanse and you are feeling worse than when you started, you are probably wondering whether something went wrong. It did not.
What you are experiencing has a name — a Herxheimer reaction — and it is one of the most misunderstood parts of the cleansing process. Understanding what is happening in your body, why it is happening, and how to support yourself through it is the difference between stopping a cleanse that is actually working and completing one that transforms how you feel.
This post breaks down every common side effect, what it means, and what to do about it.
Why Parasite Cleanse Side Effects Happen
When parasites, fungi, bacteria, and other pathogens die during a cleanse, they release a flood of waste into the body. Endotoxins, ammonia, proteins, and cellular debris from dying organisms enter the bloodstream and lymphatic system faster than the body can process and eliminate them. The immune system responds by mounting an inflammatory reaction. This is what creates the symptoms most people associate with parasite cleanse die-off.
The clinical term for this is a Herxheimer reaction — named after dermatologists Karl Herxheimer and Adolf Jarisch who first documented it in the late 1800s while treating syphilis with mercury. The principle is the same whether you are clearing a bacterial infection or a parasitic one: when pathogens die faster than the elimination pathways can remove the debris, the body signals its need for support through symptoms.
This is not the body failing. It is the body doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The symptoms are information — they are telling you the cleanse is working and the body needs more support to carry the waste out.
How intense the reaction is and how long it lasts depends heavily on the individual parasitic load. Somebody with a light parasitic burden may feel mild fatigue for a couple of days. Somebody with a heavier, more entrenched infection may experience stronger reactions that cycle over several days to a week as different populations of organisms are addressed. This is why it is impossible to predict exactly what any individual will experience — the body's response is proportional to what is being cleared.
What Biofilm Has to Do With It
Most people who have done parasite cleanses before and felt nothing — or felt extreme reactions — ran into the same problem without knowing it: biofilm.
Biofilm is the protective matrix that parasites, bacteria, and fungi secrete around themselves to shield from the immune system and from antimicrobial compounds. It is composed of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and extracellular DNA. It is the reason so many conventional parasite cleanses fail entirely or cause severe reactions while clearing only a fraction of the actual burden.
When a cleanse cannot penetrate biofilm it hits the outer layer of a parasitic population and triggers a partial die-off response. The debris from the outer organisms is released into the body while the deeper, biofilm-protected population remains intact and undisturbed. The person experiences die-off symptoms from clearing only a portion of what is there — and then the remaining population repopulates. This is why people can feel terrible on one cleanse and then find that nothing happened.
This is why our BIOPURE formula was designed to address biofilm as a primary mechanism. Multiple herbs in the formula have documented activity against biofilms through different pathways:
Black walnut contains juglone, which disrupts cell wall integrity and inhibits biofilm adhesion. Wormwood contains artemisinin compounds that generate reactive oxygen species capable of breaking down the polysaccharide matrix. Clove contains eugenol, one of the most studied biofilm disruptors in herbal medicine, with documented activity against candida, staphylococcus, and pseudomonas biofilms. Oregon grape root contains berberine, which inhibits both biofilm formation and disrupts existing biofilms. Thyme contains thymol and carvacrol, both well-documented biofilm disruptors.
When biofilm is disrupted, parasites, fungi, and bacteria that were previously protected become exposed and vulnerable. They can then be paralyzed and removed from the body intact — which is specifically what BIOPURE is designed to do. Paralyzing organisms before they die, rather than simply killing them, significantly reduces the amount of toxic debris released at once. This is what allows the cleanse to work without producing the kind of severe, overwhelming die-off that causes people to stop.
What Is Cyclospora and Why Is It Relevant Here
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a single-celled parasitic organism that infects the small intestine. Unlike bacterial pathogens such as Salmonella or E. coli, Cyclospora is harder to detect, harder to diagnose, and harder to track. It has a one to two week incubation period, meaning people become ill weeks after the exposure that caused it. It sheds intermittently in stool, which means a single test can come back negative even in someone who is actively infected.
The current outbreak affecting Michigan, Ohio, and 29 other states is a textbook example of how parasitic infections operate in the modern food system. The source appears to be contaminated produce — likely lettuce or salad greens — but no specific grower, supplier, or product has been identified. The parasite survives washing and freezing. The only reliable way to kill it in food is cooking.
From a natural health perspective, the question is not just how to clear the active infection — it is how to support the body through it and how to address the intestinal terrain that determines how severely any parasitic infection takes hold. People with strong digestive function, open elimination pathways, and a healthy microbial environment in the gut tend to clear parasitic infections more efficiently and with less severe symptoms than those whose terrain is already compromised. This does not mean natural support replaces medical care for an active cyclosporiasis infection. It means that what you do before, during, and after matters for how well the body moves through it.
The principles in this post — supporting elimination, managing die-off reactions, and keeping the pathways open — apply whether you are doing a proactive parasite cleanse or supporting your body through an acute exposure like the current Cyclospora outbreak.
Common Side Effects and What They Mean
Changes in bowel movements This is usually the first thing people notice. Movements may become more frequent, change in consistency, or feel more urgent. This is the colon responding to increased microbial die-off and beginning to move waste more actively. It is a positive sign that elimination is increasing. It can also be accompanied by an awareness of what is being eliminated. This is normal.
Headaches and pressure Headaches during a parasite cleanse are one of the most common Herxheimer reactions. They occur when endotoxins and ammonia from dying organisms enter the bloodstream and lymphatic system. The brain is sensitive to these compounds. Increasing water intake, supporting bowel and kidney elimination, and resting when possible are the most effective responses.
Fatigue and brain fog The immune system is working hard during a parasite cleanse. Inflammatory cytokines released during the Herxheimer reaction require significant metabolic energy. Fatigue is the body asking for rest so it can direct that energy toward elimination. Brain fog often accompanies this — it is not a cause for alarm. It lifts as the reaction passes.
Skin changes The skin is one of the five elimination pathways. During a heavy die-off, when the liver, kidneys, and colon are managing a large toxic load, the body may route additional waste through the skin. This can present as a rash, breakout, itching, unusual odor, or a temporary worsening of existing skin conditions. It is a sign the body is actively trying to clear what it cannot process fast enough through other routes.
Bloating and digestive changes As the microbial terrain in the gut shifts, gas and bloating are common. The digestive system is recalibrating. This typically passes as the cleanse progresses and the bacterial environment begins to rebalance.
Mood shifts and emotional symptoms The gut and the brain are in constant communication through the vagus nerve. The gut contains an estimated 95% of the body's serotonin. When the microbial environment shifts rapidly, mood can follow. Some people notice anxiety, irritability, or emotional flatness during intense die-off periods. These shifts are temporary and typically resolve as the cleanse progresses.
Joint aches and body heaviness Inflammatory compounds released during die-off circulate systemically before being eliminated. This can cause temporary muscle aches, joint stiffness, or a general feeling of heaviness. It tends to be more pronounced in people with higher parasitic loads and resolves as the die-off wave clears.
How to Manage Side Effects When They Arise
The most important thing to understand is that die-off symptoms are not a reason to stop. They are a reason to add support.
Reduce your dose temporarily. If symptoms are intense, cutting your dose in half gives the body time to catch up with elimination before you continue clearing. Once symptoms ease, gradually increase back to your full dose.
Increase hydration significantly. Water is essential for the kidneys and lymphatic system to flush endotoxins. This is not optional during a parasite cleanse. Increase water intake beyond what feels comfortable.
Add binders. Chlorella and spirulina taken once or twice daily during the parasite cleanse phase help bind endotoxins and prevent them from being reabsorbed as they move through the digestive tract. This single addition can significantly reduce the intensity of die-off symptoms.
Support the bowels. If bowel movements slow during a die-off reaction, waste backs up and symptoms intensify. Castor oil packs on the abdomen support bowel movement and liver function. For people who are experienced with enema use, this is also a time when that tool can provide significant relief by physically removing the waste load from the colon.
Rest. The immune system is engaged in significant work during a Herxheimer reaction. Rest is not passive — it is the body allocating resources toward clearing. Honour that request.
Do not add more herbs. When die-off symptoms are intense, adding more antimicrobial herbs or increasing the dose is the wrong move. The problem is not the cleansing — it is the pace of elimination. Add support first. Continue the cleanse once the body has caught up.
Why Open Elimination Pathways Matter Before You Start
The single most important factor determining how intense parasite cleanse side effects will be is whether the elimination pathways are open before the cleanse begins.
The elimination pathways are the five routes the body uses to remove waste: the bowels, kidneys, liver, lungs, and skin. When any one of them is sluggish, the waste produced during a parasite cleanse has fewer exits available to it. It recirculates. Herxheimer reactions become more intense, last longer, and in some cases become severe enough that people abandon the cleanse entirely — even though it was working.
This is why a parasite cleanse should never be the first step. Month 1 of any thorough cleansing protocol is dedicated to opening and supporting all five elimination pathways before introducing antiparasitic herbs. The Elimination Pathways Bundle — Detox Tonic, No-Stress, and Nutrient Dense — is specifically designed for this purpose. Thirty days spent supporting the five pathways before beginning Month 2 fundamentally changes the experience of the parasite cleanse that follows.
If you have done a parasite cleanse before and found the side effects unbearable, there is a strong chance the elimination pathways were not open when you started. That is not a failure of the cleanse — it is a sequencing problem.

What It Looks Like When It Is Working
Becca Brunelle made it to day 21 of her parasite cleanse with zero symptoms — while still passing pinworms, liver and gallstones, tapeworm segments, a nest and eggs, and candida. Parasite cleansing had always been very challenging for her in the past. Not this time. Zero symptoms the entire 21 days.
Jenn Christensen passed tapeworms and tapeworm segments twice. Both times she experienced painful cramping in her stomach, then a bowel movement, then the worms passed. After each one she felt great. She also expelled liver flukes at the beginning of the cleanse.
These are not cherry-picked outliers. This is what happens when the elimination pathways are open, biofilm is addressed, and the cleanse is designed to paralyze and remove organisms rather than simply kill them and leave the debris inside the body to be reabsorbed.
If you are experiencing die-off symptoms and want to understand what your body specifically needs, a Live Iridology Session can show you exactly where the congestion and parasitic burden is concentrated in your particular constitution, and what protocol makes sense for your body's specific picture.
When to Seek Additional Support
Herxheimer reactions are expected and manageable for most people. However certain situations warrant additional guidance:
If you have a known autoimmune condition, compromised liver function, or are immunocompromised, parasite cleansing should be done under the supervision of a qualified holistic practitioner. If symptoms are severe, prolonged beyond a week, or include high fever, significant cardiac symptoms, or neurological changes beyond mild brain fog, seek guidance from a healthcare provider. Pregnancy is a contraindication for BIOPURE, Detox Tonic, and Drain+Defend. Do not parasite cleanse while pregnant.
If you have completed a round of the Signs You Have Parasites checklist and suspect a significant burden, or if you have a history of failed cleanses, consider an iridology reading before beginning. The iris can show the degree of parasitic terrain, the condition of the elimination pathways, and the specific organ zones under the most stress — giving you a starting point that is personalized to your constitution rather than generic.
Where to Start If You Are Ready
If your elimination pathways are open — meaning daily bowel movements and visible kidney filtration — the Parasite Cleanse Bundle (BIOPURE, Detox Tonic, and Drain+Defend) is Month 2 of the cleansing protocol.
If you are starting from the beginning and want to do this correctly in the right order, the Fresh Start Cleanse includes all three months — elimination, parasites, and heavy metals — as a complete system.
